I am a firm believer that our attitudes dictate most things in our lives. Because of this belief, I know that the one thing that I need to work on is my attitude.

When I was younger—like in my 20s—I had a T-shirt that had a picture of a big guy holding a bat and the phrase above the picture was “Attitude Adjuster.” He looked like he could adjust a few attitudes, but not in a very nice way!

I was working at a group home for adults who were struggling with mental illness at that time. Because I didn’t make a lot of money, I was running low on clean clothes and so I wore the shirt to work one day out of “desperation.”

One of my male clients did not like the shirt. He was very vocal about it. I deserved what he said, although the tone probably wasn’t the nicest. He suffered from paranoia, so wearing a shirt with a huge hulking man with a bat and the words “Attitude Adjuster” only added to his fears.

It was the last time I made that mistake. After that, I made sure to have clean laundry! Or at least wore the “attitude adjuster” shirt inside-out!

That was a few years ago. Now I would have handled the situation very differently. I probably would have said, “Look, this isn’t for you. This is a joke. Sometimes jokes aren’t funny. I will keep that in mind next time. But let’s not let this ruin our day, okay?”

Back then, I think I probably cowered away from him feeling like a whipped puppy with my tail between my legs! I sure wouldn’t have said anything remotely uplifting to quell the situation.

Because our attitudes can dictate our moves in this world, we can enjoy the miracle of each day. It is all in how you approach your day that makes the difference between an ordinary and mundane day and one that is full of life and miracles. I am not talking about walking on the water kind of miracles, but just accepting the fact that the world is still spinning and we don’t go flying off into outer space! That, to me anyway, is something miraculous!

When you feel like you have no control over your day, just remember that you may not be able to control what happens to you, but you can control how you react to what happens!

Keep positive and enjoy your miraculous life!

  1. And this is so true. While we might not be able to control what happens to us everyday, we can control how we react to the things that happen to us and that is what would make everyday be miraculous. It is also true that Sometimes, we need confidence to be able to react appropriately to certain situations. And because you have grown a lot confident now, you are going to be able to respond to that client in a different way than you did then. We have the power inside of us, we just need to harness and use it. Great, uplifting article.

    1. Hello Vapz and thanks for visiting my site. I am glad you enjoyed the article! You are right, with experience comes maturity.

      Best wishes,

  2. Nice) wonderful writeup you got here, and very inspiring too. I do have few experiences bout attitude when living with my brother. He’s the open type and always want people to be around him, because of that, he’s very friendly and got more help when needed. Unlike me, I love being alone and not around alot of people, so whenever help is needed, he always comes to my aid. Until he told to change my attitude towards being with others, it’s my nature but he taught me a trick to go around it, and that has really helped me in getting along better with others.

    1. Hello Ayodeji and thanks for visiting my site. I, too, enjoy solitude, but in my job, I have to be sociable. It can be trying at times, but it does give us more everything when we can develop friendships as hard as it may be sometimes.

      Best wishes,

  3. Wow what an interesting article on attitude. This is really what I’ve been searching for. Attitude is really an interesting part of our lives as humans. Some people have very bad attitude while some have good attitude. But change is always constant so one can always change for the better even if he or she have the worst attitude. Thanks for putting all this together. Cheer’s

    1. Hi Tony and thanks for visiting my site! I used to bog myself and everyone else down with a bad attitude, until I really saw  what it was doing to myself and others. It’s a lot easier to be happy than to frown and bring everyone down.

      Best wishes,

  4. Thank you for this inspiring story, it’s more of a reminder for me as well. Sometimes I don’t even notice my attitude or facial expressions that go along with how I was feeling. Someone would say what’s wrong with you and I would respond nothing, and they would say why is your face like that? I would then immediately snap out of it as if I was in a trance, I would notice that maybe I was frowning for longer than I thought from some previous emotion. Now listening to myself I see how funny that was. 🙂

    1. Thanks for visiting my site and for your thoughtful comments, Vince. It’s interesting how our faces can reveal our inner thoughts. I try to keep a smile on my face—it Keeps everyone guessing!

  5. This is a great article. Just what I needed!

Attitude determines how far one can go in life. Get the right attitude and you’re set! Get the wrong one and you are doom! Your attitude toward what happened to you is what define you. If you can see only positive. I  used to be Pesmistic and I allways have a bad till I see a  psychologist and educate me on the need to stay optimistic and moving forward my life changed an I became happier. So yes your attitude is you!
