Some days are just bad days, that’s all. You have to experience sadness to know happiness, and I remind myself that not every day is going to be a good day, that’s just the way it is! ~Dita Von Teese

I do not know a single person who has never had a bad day.

It starts first thing in the morning when your alarm forgets to go off… and it just advances from there. Maybe the car won’t start or the cat decided to have kittens on your bed—while you were in it!

Maybe you got sad news.

Maybe your dog ate your “homework.”

Maybe your “homework” ate your dog!

Whatever the case may be, we have all had a bad day.

Because of that fact, we can all relate to each other in one way or another. And because we can all relate to each other, we have the ability to experience joy and happiness, too!

It’s that ability to connect to each other that gives us the whole range of emotions that we, as humans, can experience.

I’m not a professional in the field of psychology, but I am an observer of people and events, which I believe gives me the ability to make these statements—or judgements—if you will.

After studying in the field for six years and then working in the field for another six years, I found that real-life and real-life connections were far different from what I learned in books or in the classroom. I think this is true in any profession.

The bottom line is—in my opinion—that we can make our own happiness, even in the worst of circumstances. Our brains have this unique way of translating events into categories. Once we have the ability to start reclassifying things, I think we can start to see the “silver-lining” in nearly every situation.

  1. Nice article! I like to say its just a bad day, not a bad life….

I like the thinking that to experience happiness you need to know sadness. Its all about mindset though isnt it? With good mindset you can turn what started off as a bad day into a good day, right? especially if the homework ate the dog hahah!

    1. Thanks for visiting, Dianne. Thanks for your thoughtful comments.

Although my homework has yet to eat my dog, you never know! 🙂

      Best wishes,
      Karin 🙂

  2. I must say that this article is very interesting and in some case, very motivating. We all have problems and just as you said, they start in the morning when we wake up. Not every day is bad but most are and that is something we cannot control. We should find happiness in ourselves and just keep going.

    1. Thanks for visiting my site, Daniel!

I do disagree with you to a point, I don’t think that “most” days are bad. 🙂 You are right, though, we can’t control the circumstances, the only thing we can control is how we react to things! 🙂

      Best wishes,
      Karin 🙂

  3. Thanks for sharing this wonderful words of encouragement. I’m glad to know from your article that we have to experience some bad days in order to appreciate the good ones. Although some bad days might make one feel that the universe is against us, we should always have it at the back of our mind that ‘tough times don’t last, only tough people do’.

    1. Thanks for visiting my site, Matthew!

Yes, tough people do last! Sometimes that is hard to remember, but it is the truth!

      Best wishes,
      Karin 🙂

  4. Yes you are right man, everybody has experience a bad day one way or the other. I was really pissed off by my boss at work last week and I wasn’t happy. It took a time for me to make something out of the situation. But I leant now in your post that even if we are a bad mood, we can still process the situation and make things out of it.

    1. Thanks for visiting my site.

We can always choose how we respond to a situation. Do we want to use our energy being angry or making a better choice? The decision is up to us.

      Best wishes,
      Karin 🙂

  5. The “silver-lining” in all situations is very possible. If you do a little study on the subconscious mind,  you will notice that the power of autosuggestion gives us a clue to attaining happiness all the time.  All I do when negative thing happens to me is to tell my self that every thing is for my good. Just repeat that affirmation for few times you will be happy

    1. Thanks for the ideas, Paschal. Everything is for our good, but we don’t always see that, especially when we are in the midst of it!

      Best wishes,
      Karin 🙂
